The Commitment

The United States has declared manufacturing competitiveness, critical mineral independence, and defense industrial capacity to be national priorities, through executive orders, a strategic minerals stockpile, new international minerals partnerships, and, in August 2026, direct federal investment in mining and minerals education. The processing facilities, supply chains, and production lines this commitment requires are being funded now.

The Constraint

Facilities do not run themselves. Every processing plant, mill, and supply chain America builds will succeed or fail on operational performance: recovery rates, energy per ton, throughput, uptime, quality. That performance is produced by people who can read industrial data, model processes, schedule production, and improve yield, month after month. The United States does not currently train enough of them, at any tier. Mining and minerals degree production has fallen for a decade while more than half the existing workforce approaches retirement, and the shortfall is largest exactly where degree programs do not reach: the technicians, operators, and plant engineers who make up most of the need.

What Closing the Gap Requires

The arithmetic of training pipelines points to one conclusion. Four-year and graduate programs are essential and cannot respond quickly enough alone: students who will graduate within the policy window are already enrolled. Meeting the moment requires training architecture at every tier, operating in parallel: research universities producing specialists, regional institutions serving industrial clusters, community colleges and trade programs producing technicians at scale, and open, high-throughput pathways that reach working practitioners where they are. Federal program design has begun to reflect this, extending workforce funding eligibility beyond universities to community colleges, trade schools, and industry partners.

What This Program Does About It

Project FORGE is a working implementation of the open, high-throughput tier: a free, structured pathway from programming fundamentals to industrial optimization, built for the practitioners American industry runs on and taught through the operations that matter most, including mineral processing, steel production, and critical supply chains. The FORGE Framework publishes the full curriculum architecture and the model for scaling it from open access to cohorts to institutional partnership. The program is small and honest about it. It is also real, operating, and designed from the start to be one node in the larger training architecture the constraint demands.
